T’ai Chi Ch’uan
I provide instruction in the practice of t’ai chi ch’uan. I offer additional instruction in hsing-I ch’uan, pa kua chang, and chin-na; as well as facilitating practice of tui shou, ta lu, and other sensing-hand drills and supplemental forms.
I have studied t’ai chi ch’uan and other Chinese martial arts for over twenty years. My primary teachers were Harry Johnston of Asheville, NC, and Mr. R. W. Smith, noted scholar, author, and teacher of Chinese boxing.
Although I first came to t’ai chi ch’uan as a form of martial arts, I have learned to appreciate it as one of the most beneficial forms of exercise, therapy, meditation, and personal growth as emphasized by Prof. Cheng Man-ch’ing. In the past, I developed a violence management and de-escalation course for social workers and mental health clinicians and taught it at professional conferences and agency trainings in several states. I also taught self-defense for various social service and youth organizations in Yancey and Transylvania counties.
